Want a real Rocky Mountain high? Try “Vettes On The Rockies,” a well-established Corvette event founded and hosted each year by the Looking Glass Corvette Association, a Denver area club.

From its humble beginnings with a handful of Corvettes back in 1973, this annual celebration in the lovely mountain town of Frisco, Colorado, has steadily grown in popularity and in numbers each year since. More than 500 cars participated this year, with 237 of them taking part in the rally. Esther Kistler deserves kudos for chairing the event, which included not just the rally and the show, but an autocross, a funkana, and social events. Her husband, Gary, coordinated the well-attended autocross in which 189 Corvettes took part.

General Motors was well represented, too. Dale Jacobson brought some very special Corvettes for display, including the ’59 Sting Ray and the Aerovette, which made for an impressive display. To incorporate the present as well as the past, Rollie Purifoy of Purifoy Chevrolet in Fort Lupton arranged for a beautiful Millennium Yellow Z06 to be there as well. (Earlier in the summer, he was the one who put the bug in our ear about attending the show.) Special thanks to Dave Peacy and Fred Gallash, for getting out of bed before sunrise on Sunday so we could get some fabulous shots of it at Loveland Pass (altitude 11,995 feet). One of those shots graces the calendar in this month’s center spread.

Club President Tom Robben, National Corvette Museum Ambassador Jim Evans, and other club members made it their personal mission to ensure that everyone had a good time. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t thank the local fire company for letting photog Andy Bolig climb their ladder truck to get the great overall shot of Main Street.

For a great weekend, with good company and some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever see, climb the Rockies yourself at next year’s event, August 2-5. Contact Tom Robben, (303) 232-1886, for more information.
