General Motors 454 Engine Front
01. We had on hand a GM Performance Parts 454 HO crate engine, a mill that is mild in compression ratio at 8.6:1, but features large rectangular port cylinder heads. The basic combo is similar to the 454s used in big-block Corvettes in the early '70s. What differences could be found in cam selection?

General Motors 454 Engine Water Pump
04. Since our intention was to make back-to-back camshaft changes on the dyno, a CSI electric water pump was bolted to the front of the engine. The pump boosted output at higher rpm, as a result of less parasitic drag.

General Motors 454 Engine Valve Springs
05. We found the early onset of valve float with the stock GM valvesprings. To improve high-rpm valvetrain stability, we decided to swap to a set of Comp's relatively stiff No. 930 springs.

06. Swapping the springs was handled by removing the valve covers and stripping the rockers and pushrods. With compressed air plumbed into the spark-plug hole to retain the valves, a stud-mounted valvespring compressor was employed to remove and replace the springs.
