C1 Corvette Clutch Install Fasteners
Looking from front to rear, here are the fasteners that have to be unbolted in order to remove the transmission, which is the biggest part of a clutch job. With the engine supported under the oil pan, the transmission will remain securely in place, even with all these fasteners and the cross member removed, until you pull the transmission to the rear and disengage it from the pilot bearing, the clutch disc splines, the throwout bearing, and the bell housing.
OK, you've graduated from oil and filter changes to tune-ups and even brake jobs. You've got a tool box fairly well-stocked with metric and SAE combination wrenches and sockets, and all the screwdrivers and pliers you'll ever need. You also have the obligatory locking pliers and a BFH or two.

C1 Corvette Clutch Install New Clutch Kit
Our new clutch kit comes from S.P.E.C., and includes a new disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bushing, and clutch disc alignment tool. For spirited street use and occasional racing (on the track, of course) the folks at S.P.E.C. recommended their Stage 2 unit, which includes disc friction material of pure Kevlar fiber, which provides smooth engagement and long life, while being very friendly to the metal friction surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate.
How It Works
A clutch is surprisingly simple in operation. A clutch disc with friction material on both sides is sandwiched between the flywheel and the pressure plate, also referred to as a clutch cover. The clutch disc has a splined center and "floats" fore and aft on the splines of the transmission's input shaft. The pressure plate is bolted rigidly to the flywheel, and has a friction surface that moves fore and aft to clamp the clutch disc firmly to the flywheel when the clutch pedal is released.

Rust and corrosion may cause the U-joint to be stuck in the flange. A little persuasion with a screwdriver should ease it out with no problem.

C1 Corvette Clutch Install U Joint Caps
Two of the U-joint caps are non-captive, so you want to be extra careful to keep them from falling off. As you can see, each cap carries many un-caged needle bearings, so if one of the caps drops, you’re guaranteed to play your own version of 52-card pick-up. And you know that at least one of these needle bearings is going to try to escape, in which case you’ll need to replace the U-joint.
