In its annual Buyer's Guide issue, Motor Trend called the L72 in the '66 Corvette a 450hp "fire breathing monster." A few months later when the magazine tested a convertible, the power spec was down to 425. "Our test Corvette was equipped with the most brutish version of the biggest engine offered by a company that disclaims any interest in racing," wrote Bob McVay in MT's March 1966 issue.
